What Happens When a Porkbun Domain Expires?

Porkbun is a popular low-cost domain registrar known for its quirky branding and competitive pricing. When a Porkbun domain expires, it goes through a grace period during which the domain is suspended after 10 days. Around day 21, the domain is queued for auction on GoDaddy Auctions. Porkbun has sent its expired domain inventory to GoDaddy Auctions since March 2022.

Porkbun Domain Grace Period

Porkbun provides a renewal grace period of approximately 35–45 days after expiration (typically ending on day 37 or 38). For the first 10 days, the domain continues to function normally. After day 10, the domain is suspended — the website and email stop working, but the owner can still renew at the standard price.

Once a bid is placed on the domain at auction, the domain is removed from the owner's account and cannot be renewed. Only domains with no auction bids remain renewable during the grace period.

Where Does Porkbun Auction Expired Domains?

Since March 2022, Porkbun sends its expired domain inventory to GoDaddy Auctions. This was confirmed by DomainNameWire in March 2022.

To bid on Porkbun expired domains, you need a GoDaddy Auctions membership. The domains follow the same GoDaddy expired domain auction timeline once listed — 10-day auction followed by a 5-day closeout with declining prices.

Important Notes

Porkbun notes that all times and dates in their expiration process are estimates. Many factors are beyond Porkbun's control, and the registrar makes no guarantees that timelines and procedures will precisely occur in all cases. After a domain is released by the registry, it may be made available for public registration, re-tiered as a premium domain with increased costs, or reserved by the registry.
