What Happens When a Namecheap Domain Expires?
Namecheap manages approximately 15 million domains and runs its own expired domain auction marketplace. When a Namecheap domain expires, it goes through a grace period, then enters the Namecheap auction platform approximately 7 days after expiration. Auctions run for 24 days, and unsold domains enter a $5 closeout before moving to redemption.
Namecheap Expired Domain Timeline
| Days After Expiration | Phase | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0 | Expiration | Domain expires. DNS stops resolving. Website and email go offline. |
| Day 1–7 | Early Grace Period | Owner can renew at standard price. Domain is parked. |
| Day 8 | Auction Listing | Domain is listed on Namecheap's auction marketplace. Expiration date is not counted, so a Dec 1 expiry lists on Dec 9. |
| Day 8–32 | Expired Domain Auction | 24-day auction. Owner can still renew if no bids have been placed. |
| Day 32+ | Closeout | If no bids, auction extends 24 hours with $5 minimum bid. |
| ~Day 33–63 | Redemption Period | Domain can be recovered with redemption fee + renewal price. |
| ~Day 63–68 | Pending Delete | 5-day registry deletion queue. Domain cannot be recovered. |
Namecheap Domain Grace Period
After a Namecheap domain expires, the registrant has a grace period of approximately 30 days (varies by TLD) to renew the domain at the standard renewal price. During this time, DNS stops resolving and the domain is parked on a Namecheap landing page.
Namecheap Expired Domain Auction
Namecheap runs its own auction marketplace for expired domains. Domains appear in the auction approximately 7 days after expiration (the expiration date itself doesn't count). Key details:
- Auctions run for 24 days
- All auctions end daily at 11 AM Eastern Time (NYC)
- The original registrant can renew during the auction as long as no bids have been placed
- Once a bid is placed, the domain cannot be renewed by the original owner
Namecheap Auction Tools
- Proxy Bid: Set your maximum bid in advance and the system bids incrementally on your behalf
- Auctions API Access: Automate bidding and track auctions programmatically
Namecheap Closeout Process
As of March 2025, Namecheap updated its closeout process. If an auction ends with no bids, it automatically extends for another 24 hours with a minimum bid of $5. This replaced the previous buy-now closeout model.
Important: Registry-listed .ai domains marked as "Partner" do not go to closeouts, and unsold .ai domains are not released for registration immediately.
Namecheap Domain Redemption Period
If the domain is not purchased at auction or closeout, it enters the redemption period, which typically lasts 30 days. During redemption, the original registrant can recover the domain, but a redemption fee applies on top of the standard renewal price. Redemption fees vary by TLD and can be significant — often $100 or more.
Where Does Namecheap Auction Expired Domains?
Unlike many registrars that send their expired inventory to GoDaddy Auctions or NameJet, Namecheap runs its own auction marketplace at namecheap.com/domains/marketplace. This means you need a Namecheap account to bid on Namecheap expired domains.
