What Happens When a Moniker Domain Expires?

Moniker is a domain registrar that sends its expired domain inventory to GoDaddy Auctions. When a domain expires, Moniker takes ownership of all expired domain names until they are renewed, auctioned, sold, or deleted. Within a few days of expiring, the domain is listed on GoDaddy Auctions.

Moniker Domain Grace Period

When a Moniker domain expires, the registrant has a grace period to renew. During this time, Moniker takes ownership of the expired domain name. The domain stops resolving and the website goes offline. To provide the renewal grace period, Moniker pays the registry operator for the renewal on the expiration date, then allows the registrant time to renew.

Where Does Moniker Auction Expired Domains?

Moniker sends its expired domain inventory to GoDaddy Auctions. The domains follow the standard GoDaddy expired domain auction timeline — a 10-day auction followed by a 5-day closeout with declining prices.

Moniker Closeout Issues

There have been reports of Moniker domains being pulled from GoDaddy closeout auctions even when they didn't sell. In one observed case, a domain that didn't sell at the $40 closeout price was removed from GoDaddy's listings entirely — GoDaddy confirmed it was no longer listed and did not record a sale. It's unclear whether these domains eventually drop or are retained by Moniker.

Moniker and SnapNames History

Moniker previously used SnapNames as its auction partner for expired domains. The partnership has since shifted to GoDaddy Auctions.
