.COM Market Overview

The .com domain extension remains the world's most registered TLD. As of Q1 2026, there are 163.6 million .com domains and 12.4 million .net domains, for a combined 176.1 million domains under Verisign's management.

Key Market Trends

  • GoDaddy dominates but is shrinking. GoDaddy holds 32% of all .com domains (52.7M) but lost 584,102 domains year-over-year. It still registers the most new .com domains monthly (732K in March 2026).
  • Namecheap is the fastest-growing major registrar. Added over 2 million .com domains in 12 months, more than any other registrar. Now holds 13.2M domains, firmly in second place.
  • Cloudflare is rising fast. Gained 1.1M domains year-over-year and now ranks 6th in new monthly registrations. Cloudflare's at-cost domain registration continues to attract registrants.
  • Newfold Digital is losing the most. Lost 1.6M domains year-over-year — the largest decline of any registrar. Newfold owns Network Solutions, Bluehost, HostGator, Domain.com, and Register.com.
  • GMO had a banner month. Nearly tripled new registrations from 69,610 in February to 197,038 in March, jumping to 5th place in monthly new registrations.
  • Overall .com growth is healthy. Q1 2026 saw 11.5M new .com and .net registrations, up from 10.1M in Q1 2025. Year-over-year growth stands at 3.7%.

Why This Data Matters for Expired Domains

Registrar rankings directly affect the expired domain market. When a registrar loses domains (like Newfold Digital's -1.6M year-over-year decline), many of those become available through the registrar's expired domain auction channel. Newfold Digital's losses flow to NameJet, while GoDaddy's churn stays within GoDaddy Auctions.

Registrars with growing portfolios (Namecheap, Cloudflare, Hostinger) will eventually generate larger expired domain inventories on their respective auction platforms. Understanding which registrars are growing helps predict where expired domain volume will shift in the coming years.
